This fuel shipment is a key focus of an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) into a multi-billion-shilling saga involving allegations of the importation of substandard fuel. The ship at the centre of the investigation, the MT Paloma, arrived at Mombasa on March 27, 2026, and was permitted to discharge its cargo despite not meeting standard International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requirements.
